ABOUT DAPHNE RODGERS

Artist Biography

Daphne’s abstract, multimedia paintings and drawings are created with vivid colors and painterly forms balanced in lively compositions, representing her direct responses to external energy. She describes these experiences as allowing her to “absorb and express the emotional energy of people and environments.” A native of North Carolina, Daphne is interested in the moods found in a variety of environments.  Most notably, the evolution of Daphne’s work includes painting at local musical events. By working in front of a live audience, Daphne herself becomes part of the exhibition.

Daphne is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BFA in Studio Art.  She lives in Raleigh and has exhibited at numerous galleries and venues across North Carolina.

Artist Statement

Creating art is a right-brained communication for me, a way to process and non-verbally express my experiences. My work is a result of the convergence of internal thoughts and external movement.  My experience as a guitarist drives me to translate harmonies found in music into gestures of color and form in my painting. Live painting events provide me with a way to absorb the emotional energy of the people and environments around me, and to release that energy into the colors and composition.  I create impasto style acrylic paintings on canvas, and quieter, small scale drawings on paper using a balance of diverse palettes of vivid and contrasting colors, energetic and organized brushwork, meandering lines, and soft, organic forms.  Objects like string from the canvas, natural sand, and leaves often make their way into my paintings to create texture and complement form.
